Diamond Blades
Diamond blades are an essential tool for any contractor that has the need to cut through building materials that are very hard or dense.

If you are a builder that works with masonry construction, you know that some materials are very difficult to cut with any degree of precision. Some of these materials include:
- Stone – Stone by nature is rough and uneven, and can be difficult to cut using traditional blades.
- Cement block – This is used in a variety of construction environments where an exact cut is required.
- Concrete- Often used for a driveway, curbing or other hardscape applications – diamond blades cut through these beautifully.
- Brick – Bricks can come in a variety of sizes, depending on the project and what the customer wants. You may need to cut them down to an odd size on occasion.
When working on a construction project, it is not sufficient to get a cut that is “pretty close” – the fit has to be snug, which means your cut has to be precise. That’s where diamond blades come in.
Diamond blades are not created like other saw blades. Most “traditional” blades are made from steel, or perhaps a combination of steel and other metals. The composition is what primarily determines the cost; weaker blades are less expensive, and don’t last as long – as you would expect.
Diamond blades are different, in that they have more than just a steel core. They also are coated with a powder metal that contains actual bits of diamonds. Diamonds are the best material to use for cutting, because they are so dense and hard. That’s why diamond segments are used to coat the steel blade; it enables the blade to cut through just about any material in a very exact manner.
Diamond blades can be used in a wide range of applications. When cutting, the cut itself can be considered either wet or dry.
- Wet cut – This is better for the blade itself. When the blade is cutting any kind of hard material, the friction generated causes the blade to get very hot in a short period of time. In order to keep the blade cooler, some saws have a built-in mechanism to spray water on the blade when it is running. An external source of cooling water may also be used. When the diamond blades are kept cooler, a lot less dust is created and they will have an overall longer useable lifespan.
- Dry cut – Sometimes a dry cut is necessary when no water source is available, or the work environment prohibits water being sprayed. Dry cuts tend to be more time-consuming, since you need to stop at regular intervals in order to let the blade’s temperature go down a bit. Also, when doing a dry cut, be sure to wear a properly-fitted mask to filter out dust – some of the particles in the dust can be unhealthy and should not be breathed.
One thing to consider when purchasing this type of blade is whether the teeth of the blade are rated as hard-bonded or soft-bonded. A hard-bonded blade will have a high ration of diamonds to metal dust. This means that the blade in general will last longer, but that it should be used for cutting “softer” materials such as brick. A soft-bonded blade will have teeth with a layer of diamond crystals that will wear off more quickly, bringing a new set of diamonds to the top that will continue cutting. Soft-bonded blades are more appropriate for cutting harder materials, such as very dense stone.
